Automotive paint can be difficult to keep up with in an ever-changing market place. Many believe technology has made modern paint more and more cumbersome to understand and use.

Martin Auto Color^TM is proud to offer the Envirobase^® line to all of our distributors. You may be skeptical of waterborne finishes if you are old enough to remember back in the 80’s and 90’s when the early products were less than desirable.

PPG’s Envirobase^® High Performance waterborne paint is not only safer it is cleaner. Utilizing the same function that solvents serve in conventional coatings; the waterborne paint transfers the plastic resins to the painted surface where they in turn evaporate.

Another benefit you can enjoy with the Envirobase^® waterborne technology allows the toners (which contain anti-settling technology) to keep components in suspension, thus preventing pigments from settling at the bottom. A simple shake of the toner bottle up to five or six times will prove the contents ready to pour.

Have you had haloing issues in the past when providing automotive paint services. No worries. Waterborne paint technology provides a much better basecoat because it will not attack the existing finish like the conventional solvent-based formulas currently on the market.
All of this wonderful application, durability and technology do not come without a small compromise. Waterborne basecoats cannot level imperfections; dry film thickness will end up around .5 mils or approximately half the thickness of solvent basecoats. With proper sanding you can avoid this obstacle, a small price to pay – for such an amazing product. Also, keep in mind a thinner finish is less likely to chip than a thicker one.

A few key notes to keep in mind when utilizing a waterborne alternative:

• Waterborne can be matched precisely by formulating, not by the naked eye.
• Waterborne paint can be a bit more sensitive when it is reduced to a specific viscosity.
• Wax and grease removers will not touch water-soluble contaminants.
• It is typically best to prep with water-based cleaners and then follow with solvent-based cleaners.
• Paint may transfer shiny but will matte as it dries.
• Envirobase^®will dry to the touch within 15 minutes
