The calendar may have flipped to January and we may think that the giving season is behind us, but rest assured that the giving spirit is still strong! Ask the nearly 6.8 million people across the country who annually donate blood and give the gift of life to other Americans in need to be certain.
January is National Blood Donor Month, an opportunity to raise awareness of blood donation and pay homage to those who save lives by simply donating their blood. According to the American Red Cross, “Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.” That adds up to about 36,000 units needed daily to treat people in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities.
Donating blood is a gift to the community, as 1 of every 3 people will need blood over the course of their lifetime. Every pint of donated blood can potentially save 3 adult lives and just 3 teaspoons can save that of an infant. People’s lives rest in the kindness of strangers.
By donating blood, not only will you have the satisfaction of helping others, but you may also benefit from:
• Reduced risk of heart disease
• Lowered risk of cancer
• Learning of potential health issues as a result of the mini-physical before donation
• Superhero status for those you’ve helped.
If you haven’t made your New Year’s resolutions for 2017, resolve to celebrate National Blood Donor Month and visit the American Red Cross website find a blood drive near you.
