PPG helps build and paint bicycles for children in Istanbul

PPG recently announced their completion of a COLORFUL COMMUNITIES™ project in Istanbul, Turkey, which provides newly built and painted bicycles to nearly 35 elementary school students, including 15 who are Syrian refugees. The Colorful Communities program is PPG’s signature initiative for community engagement efforts and their aim is to protect and beautify the neighborhoods where PPG operates around the world. Having already completed 11 Colorful Communities projects in 2015 alone, they expect to complete approximately 30 more this year.

To make this specific project a success, PPG’s employees from Turkey worked alongside others, including: a PPG customer, the Turkish Red Crescent Foundation, and ACCELL Bisiklet. Volunteers spent 3 days building and painting bicycles that would be given to the children. Additionally, PPG provided $15,500 to assist with the project. This amount included their generous donation of over 3.7 gallons of PPG industrial coating products, used to paint the gifted bicycles for each child, in his or her favorite color. As part of the project, the children visited one of PPG’s training centers to learn about the company and participate in fun activities with volunteers. Later, the bicycles were presented to the children at a celebration which took place at Botanical Park, Bursa.

Nurhayat Ulucan, PPG human resources manager, Turkey, said, “PPG aims to protect and beautify the world not just for our customers, but also for our neighbors in need. We believe that the first step to helping a community improve is to help its children. Our employees here in Turkey are directly witnessing how the situation in Syria is impacting so many innocent children. With this project, we wanted to help unite these children with local Turkish children and with our entire community.” The program increases PPG’s commitment to invest in communities, by adding $10 million to support efforts made during a 10-year period.
