Basic is Big

Have you ever noticed a car model with multiple different shades of gray, but only one shade of red? The reason is because basic colors are the most popular amongst consumers. Selling cars in neutral, conventional and inoffensive tones are what most dealers do because it is what the consumer wants. Just because these colors are considered basic, doesn’t mean that they are plain! A shade of black has the potential to be as captivating as a shade of yellow. PPG explains that the paint color all depends on how it is applied to the car. For example, some colors are created with a metallic base coat under a tinted clear coat. Another method is an intricate three layer process, where the 1st coat is stripped of its mica and aluminum, and then the 2nd coat adds them in the middle. The 3rd step is when the clear coat is applied. This allows the consumer to get the conventional color that they want, while still having a captivating color.

What Does the Future Hold?

The colors that seem to be growing in popularity are browns, oranges, golds and even light blues and with the attention that these colors are getting now, you should expect to see more of them on the road. Two-tone matte finishes are also quickly being adopted by mainstream car manufacturers after being exclusive to luxury cars for years. Interestingly enough, color shifting pigments are also gaining popularity.
