The home of the Pittsburgh Penguins is being renamed.
According to the Penguins, CONSOL Energy Center is being renamed PPG Paints Arena as of October 4th, 2016!
According to Michael McGarry, PPG’s Chairman and CEO, this is a great brand building opportunity. He expressed, “as we continue to invest in building our brand, PPG Paints Arena offers us a unique platform to showcase our paint and coatings products that help protect and beautify the world.”
Signage both inside and outside of the arena will be updated before the kick off of this years’ season. Meanwhile, CONSOL Energy will still be involved with the Penguins.
“Though our priorities have evolved, we will maintain a presence in the arena and will continue to do our part in driving the region forward. As a company with deep roots in this region, we are pleased to be able to transfer the naming rights from one iconic Pittsburgh company to another,” CONSOL Energy Director of Communications, Brian Aiello, said in a statement.
The move comes as Pittsburgh-based PPG increases its efforts in the retail paint business and CONSOL, based in suburban Cecil Township, has struggled with financial losses while transitioning from a coal-based firm to one fueled by the future of natural gas.
Coach Mike Sullivan led the Penguins to a 6 game Stanley Cup win against the San Jose Sharks last season. We can’t wait to see what this season has in store!
